Large Edwardian Sideboard in the Neoclassical Style
Located in London, GB
This fine and large sideboard, or console table, commands attention, and yet exudes both the grace and the refined elegance of the neoclassical style, which has enjoyed continued revivals in England from the 18th century onward. This particular piece is reminiscent of the work of Robert and James Adam, Scottish architects and designers of the 18th century, who were famous for executing many prominent buildings and also for presiding over a particular style of neoclassicism which was widely used for interior decorations and furniture. This sideboard is of curved, rectangular form and is particularly striking for the frieze which runs around its width, just below the top. The frieze features marquetry decorations of fruit baskets and scrolling arabesques, intersected by small, arched painted panels of classical women stood atop pedestals, on a green ground. The painted panels are framed within beaded gilt borders, and the frieze is bordered above and below with gilt banding. The centre of the frieze features a wide drawer, and each of the curved ends open into shallow cupboards...
