Striking ‘Pre-Japanese’ style sideboard after Cees Braakman This design has long been attributed to the Dutch designer Cees Braakman, and listed as ‘Pre Japanese’, a purer form of his later ‘Japanese’ style sideboards for Pastoe. In design terms this sideboard is arguably a more stripped-back, simpler and purer conception than Braakman’s ‘Japanese’ sideboards. In particular the handles are less fussy than the ‘Japanese’ designs, and ironically in that sense more Japanese than Braakman. While we have to agree that 'This sideboard gives the look and feel of the famous so-called Japanese series by Cees Braakman for Pastoe’ our own feeling is that the design is, if anything, an improvement. This particular example is thought to be a one-off special order, unique in its limed finish, a highly-attractive feature that lifts it well above similar examples with the more traditional brown wood finish. The contrast between the wenge handles and limed doors and top in this piece makes it really stand out as a superior example. The manufacturer was not Pastoe but another Dutch manufacturer, Hulmefa, and again ‘strongly inspired by Cees Braakmans' famous 'Japanese' series for Pastoe’. This is a beautiful sideboard from the 'Propos' series. Apparently it was only in production for a short time, and as a result is rare and hard-to-find even in the standard wood finish. This one, with the uniquely attractive limed finish is special indeed.
