A spectacular 19th century French gilt-bronze mounted vitrine by: CHARLES-GUILLAUME DIEHL, PARIS, and Leon Bertaux. Each door with a relief-cast oval plaque showing putti in various positions , inscribed: Mme Leon BERTAUX. The lock-plate signed DIEHL/19.r.Michel le Comte/PARIS, Charles-Guillaume Diehl A native of Steinbach, Germany, Diehl (d.1885) settled in Paris in 1840. He established a large atelier at 39, rue Saint-Sebastien, where by 1870 he employed no less than six hundred craftsmen. Diehl participated in the Great Exhibition in 1851 and in all the major international exhibitions during the middle of the 19th century thereafter. At the 1867 Universal Exposition, Diehl was awarded a silver medal, and the winning cabinet he presented that year is one of the pieces of furniture most often cited and reproduced of the period. Various pieces by Diehl are in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy, Nancy and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
