Important Oak, Giltwood and Bronze Four Door Grande Vitrine, circa 1870
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
An important oak, giltwood and bronze four door Grande Vitrine. French, circa 1870. An important oak, giltwood and bronze four door 'Grande Vitrine'. The projecting cornice finely carved with a frieze of linked coquillage centred by a sculptural giltwood cresting of a crowned shield displaying the double 'L' monogram above a Fleur-de-lis of Louis Philippe and flanked by playful putti, below three pilaster uprights each with gilded Corinthian capitals and trailing foliate relief, frame two sets of brass faced bronze doors fitted with plate glass and opening to an interior containing three shelves, the sides similarly glazed and the whole raised on a plain square section base. This vitrine was formerly in the collection of the Monseigneur Le Comte de Paris et Madame la Comtesse de Paris from the Villa La Quinta Do Anjiho in Portugal. When, after the Second World War, the Count and Countess of Paris (Duc and Duchesse d'Orleans) moved to La Quinta, they decorated the villa almost entirely with furniture and works of art from the estate of the Duc de Guise...

Maurice Dufrene Gilt Sculpted Vitrine
Located in Philadelphia, PA
French Early Classic Art Deco cabinet/vitrine by Maurice Dufrene, circa 1912, in gilt sculpted wood . This cabinet is pictured in Dufrène's own Hôtel Parrticulier (private residence), at 22, rue Bayard in Paris, taken in 1918 (see photo below). The lemonwood version of this cabinet was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1912 and is now on permanent display at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris (see photo below). This cabinet is in original condition and a scan of the original drawing is shown here. Maurice Dufrêne (1876 - 1955) One of the premiere French designers of the 20th Century, Maurice Dufrene was born in Paris in 1876. He was educated at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. By 1899, at the age of just 23, he became the director and manager of La Maison Moderne. This shop represented an association of artists who were working together to create designs which could be produced in multiples. Dufrene's work was first shown at salons in 1902 and from 1903 he regularly exhibited at Salon d'Automne and Salons of Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. At the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which would later give the movement "Art Deco" its name), Dufrene's designs included luxury boutiques, the living room of Une Ambassade Francaise pavilion, the music salon...
