19th Century French Renaissance Revival Armoire

About the Item

19th Century French Renaissance Revival Armoire represents an example of fine craftsmanship that is more art than mere furniture! Utilizing select, old-growth oak, the sculptors have created an ode to the Renaissance that became a pivotal revival during the middle of the 1800s. The carved themes include a bold heraldic crest forming the crown, lavished with bounty-of-the-earth and scrollwork motifs. The sculpture rests on the boldly carved crown molding which juts out on each corner and extends outwards with acanthus leaf and laurel wreath detailing. The upper corner plinths just below are lavished with full relief grapevine and grape cluster carvings "suspended" with bows and ribbon. Each upper corner plinth flankd the incredible carved sculpture across the bonnet which combines the heraldic crest with fully laden grapevine theme in glorious full relief. Just below appears the full-length mirror on the door, trimmed with an egg-themed molding, and flanked by amazingly carved barley twist columns with vine relief, topped with Corinthian capitals just underneath the aforementioned upper corner plinths. The columns lead the eyes down to the base, which is comprised of a full width drawer lavished with stylized egg, foliates and scrollwork flanked by the lower corner plinths, each of which features an egg-themed heraldic crest facing forward, and grapevines on the sides, all resting atop multiple tiers of carved molded detail just over the bun feet. Even the side panels ~ four on each side ~ are carved intaglio style with stylized shell and rosette themes and fanciful molded detail. Door opens to reveal a spacious interior fitted with adjustable shelves making this exceptional piece as functional as it is breathtaking to behold! Circa 1850s Measures 89H x 50W x 24D.
