Chinese Red Lacquer Wedding Cabinet, c. 1800

About the Item

A classic piece of Chinese furniture, this striking red lacquer cabinet was likely part of a traditional wedding dowry, bestowed upon the groom by the bride's family filled with fine silks, linens, and other gifts. Dated to the early 19th century, the tall cabinet has a clean-lined form, designed with straight sides, square corners and minimal embellishment. The cabinet front is cloaked in layer upon layer of cinnabar-red lacquer, now heavily crackled with a texture that calls to be touched. The vibrant color is contrasted by black lacquer sides and a full-moon iron plate with two pulls and a sliding lock. A storied addition to the modern home, the cabinet offers ample storage with two interior shelves, two drawers, and a hidden lower compartment. Some restoration to stabilize lacquer finish.
