Late 18th C. French Rennes Armoire, Cherrywood, Brittany, Attributed J.B.Depouez

About the Item

This Armoire, attributed to J.B. Depouez, features a large double bonnet cornice above two tall doors, arched in the upper section. Adorned with sawtooth accents above and below stylized oak leafe details on crown. Deep set moldings are in the late baroque style, softened by the many oak leaf and rosette carvings. All speak of a highly skilled craftsman. Many believe the finest Country French Armoires were made around Rennes. Skilled carvers often signed their pieces, and incorporated the monogram of bride and groom, if the amoire was part of a dowry. There is no other region in France where the double chapeau de gendarme cornice and the delightfully naive and whimsical ornamentation of stylized flowers, branches interlacing vines, intersperced with C-scrolls, architectural elements and symmetrical patterns identify the works of these skilled cabinetmakers in and around Rennes.
