Monumental 19th Century Chinese Wedding Dowry Chest

About the Item

A phenomenal hand carved and painted wooden antique wedding dowry stacked drawer carriage chest from China. Commissioned in the 19th century to commemorate the wedding of a new bride and likely given as part of her dowry. After being filled, two people would have carried the box with a long pole inserted through the round iron hardware attached to the carved triangular outer frame. Having a rectangular form inner within triangle framework case outer. Polychrome painted, red accents, metal mounting to corners and joints. Having a removable top, over four stacked drawers. Adorned to the front, a hand painted seated Asian figure, opening a scroll with oriental characters. Elegantly aged original paint. Warm, rustic distressed chippy paint patina over the whole. Loaded with character and charm. Remnants of export seal remain. This scarce Qing Dynasty chest of stacked drawers is truly an impressive piece, highly decorative providing lots of storage space. An extraordinary 19th century Qing dynasty 4-door vermillion cabinet with fine works of carving, painting, gilding and silvering. The solid wood construction consists of four frame members joined by tenons and mortises. The top and the main body connects through a decorative waist with carved begonias. Two center doors on dowels carved with the He-He Harmony Gods on the caps and two side doors operated by wood pegs on the frames. The top section of the doors feature three-dimensional carvings of noblewomen enjoying a garden.
