MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

"Kanji" Blown Glass Wide Pendant Lamp Designed by Denis Guidone for FontanaArte
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Kanji" is a wide pendant lamp, designed by Denis Guidone and manufactured by FontanaArte, made in blown glass with two finishes, transparent smoky gray and frosted white, and structure and handle in black painted metal. It cab be provided with a dimmer and lighting source is 10W LED (2700K, CRI>80, Lumen 1000). Dimensions: Ø 16.8", H. 15.3" (lamp) plus 98.4" "Kanji" is a collection of lighting elements that reinterprets traditional Oriental portable lanterns in a contemporary vision. Available in tabletop and ceiling models, it draws inspiration from Chinese porcelain dating from the Ming dynasty. The hand-blown glass diffuser, in frosted white and translucent smoky gray, is adorned with a pleated surface decoration. A LED ring runs inside the structure and magically illuminates the diffuser. Evocative of Far East not only as form but also as a name, as "Kanji" are characters of Chinese origin used in Japanese writing in conjunction with the Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries, "Kanji" is designed to be used alone or in pairs, with each form amplifying the aesthetic power of the other. Denis Guidone studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and at FAUP in Oporto. He won numerous international awards, including the IDA Design Award in Los Angeles. He was also given the Bruno Munari Prize by Gillo Dorfles...

Fontana Arte "Optunia" Cast Glass Table Lamp by Claesson Koivisto Rune
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Optunia" is a wall lamp, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune and manufactured by FontanaArte, featuring a structure in cast aluminum, available with paints in white, onyx or glossy black nickel-plated colors. The price of this lamp reflects the white finish. Please inquire for pricing on additional colors. Molded cast glass, frosted and painted from behind, working as a diffuser. Base in painted metal. Power source housed in the base for the wall and ceiling versions, in the breadboard for the hanging version or onto a peg in the table version. It can be provided with a dimmer and lighting sources are 2 x 11W LED (3000K, CRI>80, Lumen 1384 + 1384). Dimensions: Ø 5.1" (discs), D. 9.8", H. 10.3" "Optunia" is a collection of lighting elements available in four variants for tabletop (with or without stem), floor, wall and ceiling. Its functionality lies in the possibility of rotating the two discs that make up the nearly 360 degrees head, opening up an extraordinary number of lighting combinations. The lower disc rotates on one axis, while the upper disk simultaneously rotates on a second axis, perpendicular to the first. This double movement gives "Optunia" the advantages of both direct and indirect light emission, exploiting the surface of the wall or ceiling to produce a soft light. Complementing its functionality, the design of such lamp is reminiscent of a form found in nature: the two disks resemble the pads of the prickly pear called "Opuntia ficus-indica", from which the lamp takes its name. A collection of exceptional technical sophistication, whose form is further emphasized by its colors: opaque white, bold and clean, dark mirrored chrome, recalling the preciousness of metal, a darker shade resembling onyx and quartz color, shifting from dark brown to black. Claesson Koivisto Rune is a Swedish architectural partnership, founded in Stockholm in 1995 by Marten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune. It started as an architectural firm, but has since become an internationally acclaimed and multi-disciplinary office with an equal emphasis on both architecture and design. They were the first Swedish office exhibiting in the international section at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2004, they are also responsible for award-wining projects such as the Tind Prefab house collection for Fiskarhedenvillan, Widlund House private villa on Öland, Örsta Gallery building in Kumla, Sfera Building culture house in Kyoto and Nobis Hotel in Stockholm.
