Metz & Co Bauhaus Style Glass and Gray Metal Bar Cart with Wooden Handle

About the Item

Metz & Co bar cart features a pale gray enameled tubular metal frame on four 360-degree swivel casters. Two inset reeded glass shelves sit within the rectilinear frame — the top shelf clear-textured, the lower shelf with a frosted quality. A painted wooden handle spans one end of the cart, providing a warm contrast to the gray metal. The construction is spare and utilitarian, reflecting the Bauhaus-influenced design approach Metz & Co favored during the interwar period. Metz & Co, the Amsterdam-based retailer founded in the late 19th century, became a significant conduit for modernist and Bauhaus design in the Netherlands during the 1920s and 1930s. The firm worked closely with designers connected to De Stijl and the broader European avant-garde, commissioning and retailing functional objects that prioritized form following function. Bar carts of this type were produced during the height of Dutch engagement with Bauhaus principles. The frame shows heavy wear consistent with age and use, including scratching and enamel loss throughout. The glass shelves are chipped on top and bottom edges; sharp edges have been sanded. The wooden handle shows darkened paint and surface wear.
