American Queen Anne Walnut Candle Stand, Pennsylvania, Late 18th Century

About the Item

This exquisite little treasure is preserved in excellent original condition, untouched structurally and with no repairs or damage other than an early refinish. The table has a marvelous patina throughout, the full plank of walnut on the top lively and with the character of natural burls and swirling grain glowing under years of waxing and rubbing. It is an austere form with little ornamentation, the beauty of the natural wood undistracted; this is particularly effective when it is in a tilted position, as the stance and vibrant grain are quite striking. The top lifts on twin battens, fully original and appearing to have never been moved, each retaining their original hand cut screws and flanking an untouched pedestal. The brass clasp firmly latches to the square head of the pedestal, this joined to the pedestal with a square through-tenon that remains tight. The pillar is long and tapered over ring turnings, the cabriole legs joining this with large dovetails from beneath the pedestal. These terminate in the typical pointed ovular shoe with a raised edge. A gorgeous presentation, this is a beautiful candle stand preserved in excellent condition and certainly a piece to be cherished by any collector of early American furnishings. Measurements: Top is 21 1/8" in diameter; height is 27 1/16" rested, 38 3/8" tilted Condition Report: Early finish, not original but quite old with later polishing. Original clasp and latch, untouched structure. Light scratches and wear as expected. Overall in very fine original condition.
