About the Item

This fine American Queen Anne tilting tea table is probably a work of Chester or a nearby county. The table is preserved in outstanding condition, the restorations completed very competently and with great respect for the originality of the work. Typical of the smaller cherry planks, the upper third of the top probably started to separate from the lower two-thirds from shrinking along the grains at one point, which was healed by routing the back and inserting a splice to join the two leaves from the back. Often this is healed with a line of dovetails, so this is a somewhat imaginative and quite effective mechanism. The gap is completely healed and has resolved any bowing that may have been in the planks. Behind the top, the original cleats are affixed to the top with a series of screws set in the original wells; battens are spliced on either outer edge of the cleats to also help with what was probably a slight bow in the wood. Tenons projecting from the birdcage into the cleats allow the top to tilt easily, locking in place with it's original brass clasp and catch, both unmoved from their original positions. The birdcage is a work of sheer beauty, the tiny swollen baluster pedestals making up the corners in nearly exact replication of the larger pedestal of the table - even down to the smallest detail of the scratched beading around the midriff of the swell. These tenon through the top of the birdcage and are locked in place with split-wedges. A half-moon wedge slides through the turned collar to lock the birdcage into the void of the pedestal; typical of Chester County tables, the wedge and placement of the birdcage pillars is such that the table can easily rotate a full three-hundred and sixty degrees without touching the wedge or being in anyway inhibited. The pedestal is a wonderfully turned from a thick block of cherry, the recesses showing the alligatored and dirty cloudiness of the retained early finish. Three cabriole legs tenon into this with large dovetails in the typical manner beneath a hand forged iron bracket. The feet are spaded and rest over integral pads, and originally appears to have been situated over casters, these now absent. For the serious collector of rural Pennsylvania furniture, particularly forms from Chester County, this is a very fine acquisition indeed. Measurements: Top diameter is 34 1/2" (vertical) x 35 1/8" (horizontal); 27 7/8" H in table form, 47 5/8" H in tilted form; width toe to toe is 24 9/16" Condition Report: Early finish under layers of old wax; top is discolored with stains and an area of finish loss from an old sticker; numerous age cracks in the top and in the baluster - the joint of the two board top probably separated at one point and was healed during the 20th century with a horizontal splice from underneath. Tip of pedestal cone with patching. Casters were beneath feet at some point, since removed. Original hardware: iron triform bracket (some screws replaced), clasp and catch, cleats (with mostly replaced screws); strips affixed to the outer edges of cleats, probably to discourage warping in the top.
