Antique French Marquetry and Gilt Bronze Centre Table

About the Item

This table is an exquisite piece of French antique furniture. The table is covered with beautiful marquetry work and finely-cast gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts. The table features a shaped oval top which is decorated with bands of pattern, created by marquetry, parquetry and the wood’s natural grain. The marquetry work takes the form of stylised flowers in full bloom, scrolling and entwined foliage, and birds. The tabletop is edged with a gilt bronze band which is ornamented with leaves, ovolo motifs and beading. This top is set on a shaped gilt bronze-edged apron which is decorated with marquetry flowers, foliage and birds. These images are set against dark backgrounds, within parquetry borders. The front of the cabinet accommodates a drawer which features a cartouche-shaped gilt bronze escutcheon. The table stands on four marquetry and parquetry cabriole legs, which are mounted with gilt bronze espagnolette (female bust) sculptures. The legs terminate in gilt bronze leafy scrolled feet.
