Antique Swiss Renaissance Merchants or Bankers Table Made in Pine and Fruitwood

About the Item
This beautiful bankers table or merchants table originates in Switzerland and dates circa 1800. The tabletop and drawer were made from fruitwood, the legs are pine. The drawer's front has been decorated with many circles. The table has a warm honey color finish with a soft gloss. The table shows many marks, dents and wormholes throughout but has a solid structure. However there were no signs of active woodworm, the piece was professionally treated for the woodworm as a precaution. The table has been used intensively througout the years. The distressed look and built up patina adds great character to the table.
This is a typical merchant's table given its size and drawer. The size was this to create a certain distance between the person paying and the recipient. The payment would go in the drawer and then the drawer would slide towards the recipient. The money was put in the drawer so the amount being paid was private.
The table has been cleaned in our workshop. Minor stains on the top were removed and the old wax layers were slightly heated and buffed. It now has a beautiful soft gloss and great patina. Structurally the table is in very good condition. A new protective wax coat was applied.

- French, 19th Century, Mahogany Lamp TableLocated in Bedfordshire, GBA very good quality and very attractive mid-19th century french mahogany occasional lamp table, having superbly figured shaped tilting top, raised on elegant moulded column with fluted decoration, terminating with shaped tripod legs of gothic type design. Quite a typical design dating to the mid 19th century from France these types of table can vary wildly in quality and construction. This is one of the better examples, constructed from good quality mahogany and clearly produced in a good cabinet makers workshop due to the longevity of its functionality and the fact it has aged so gracefully, remaining as fit for purpose as the day it was made. Absolutely perfect for a whole host of spaces around the home, the functionality of this pretty little table is endless. Also depsite its relative bold styling it has enough subtlety to work in almost any interior, with any other style of furniture, including both ultra modern and extremely historic deisgn schemes. If you haven’t done so already then its worth having a look at the other variation of this table which we have in stock right now, it is pretty much identical in all ways, other than being constructed from rosewood, as opposed to mahogany. We think they would work fabulously together should one have a requirement for two similar occasional tables, but not neccessarily wish to spend the money, or have the required budget, to buy an a true pair of antique lamp...Category

- Antique Chippendale Style Nutwood & Oak Side Table / Games Table W. Great PatinaLocated in Lisse, NLAmazing workmanship sidetable, also for unforgettable games of poker, bridge etc. If you are looking for a beautiful sidetable to grace your living space then this all handcrafted specimen from the earliest years of the 20th century could be flying your way soon. This remarkable table with its amazingly hand-carved details and superb claw feet is extra rare, because it is made in the Chippendale Style. And the craftsmanship that was put into creating this antique would make Thomas Chippendale himself proud. You will hardly ever find a Chippendale Style table (or any other antique table for that matter) with such stunningly hand-carved details and for them to be as good as new after one hundred years shows that former owners too understood the importance of and the respect that one should have for this quality made piece. Apart from some minor imperfections to the table top the entire exterior AND interior of this table could not be in better condition. Even the original, inlaid, green felt 'playing field' of this table is as close to perfect as possible. This rare antique is both elegant and stately at the same time and for it not to have a maker's name on it, is strange to say the least. Because of the design, the quality of the make and the beauty of the materials, we believe this piece can only have been made by one of the European top makers from that era. By first pulling the rear legs out and then folding the top, this Chippendale table can be turned into a beautiful games table with a fine felt surface. Have you also noticed the practical and mint condition, solid tiger oak compartment that appears when you pull out the hind legs? That is where you can keep your cards and chips and maybe some board games. When closed, this also is the perfect sidetable for displaying an antique clock...Category

- Antique & Rustic Early 1800s Wooden Spanish Countryside Pay Table with DrawerLocated in Lisse, NLBeautifully time-worn, antique, Southern European, chestnut wood end or side table. This relatively small size antique table is a joy to look at and the history of this kind of table makes it very interesting as well. Pay tables or paying tables were initially used by tax collectors and later in time (in the latter part of the middle ages), when most cities started to have their own currency, came the need for 'money exchangers'. A lot of the first money exchangers in 'early Netherlands' came from the Italian region of Lombardy and their name for these paying tables was 'banco'. Yes, it is this where also the English word 'bank' originates from. Pretty soon these money exchangers, who mainly serviced businessmen and travelers, also started 'safekeeping' and lending money. These tables therefor are at the very root of banking and just like some banks in this day and age, some of these earliest 'bankers' did not keep enough cash in their tables to be able to pay out when clients needed their money. This sometimes would lead to a lynching whereby the table of that particular money lender would be broken into pieces. The Italian word for such a broken table...Category
