About the Item
José Zanine Caldas (attributed) (1919–2001)
Coffee Table, c. 1970
Attributed to renowned Brazilian designer and architect José Zanine Caldas, this unique coffee table was crafted circa 1970 from solid Vinhático, a richly grained tropical hardwood. The sculptural form reflects Zanine’s intuitive approach to wood, often working directly with native species to highlight their organic beauty and natural imperfections. With its bold, monolithic lines and tactile presence, this piece embodies the raw yet refined aesthetic characteristic of his later works. Zanine Caldas, often referred to as the “architect of the forest,” is celebrated for blending modernist principles with vernacular Brazilian traditions.
