"Arcadia 80" coffee table by Vico Magistretti for Artemide
By Vico Magistretti, Artemide
Located in Conversano, IT
Iconic coffee table model "Arcadia 80," like other examples designed by Magistretti and produced in recent years by Artemide in the reinforced resin furniture series, proposes a new aesthetic closely linked to production technology. Produced in two sizes, Arcadia is made of GRP, glassfiber reinforced plastic, a thermosetting plastic material consisting of a dense weave of glass fibers impregnated with polyester resins. Arcadia is among the design objects conceived by Magistretti by exploiting the system of "resistance by form," a way of imparting rigidity to plastic materials based on the geometric configuration imprinted on them, and a design concept that has already been tried and tested in other projects, from the Selene chair to the Chimera lamp, the Stadio coffee table and others. The performance of GRP, particularly its strong resistance to impact, bending, scratching and high temperatures, together with its inalterability to weathering make it suitable for outdoor use. Tiny signs of time present. Bibliography: Maria Teresa Feraboli: "Vico Magistretti," series "I maestri del Design," Il Sole 24 Ore editions, Milan 2011, model referenced and reproduced on p. 50; Artemide S.p.A., 1976 catalog, p. 130 Product Name:Coffee Table "Arcadia 80" by Vico Magistretti for ArtemideDesigner: Vico Magistretti Year of Design: 1970s Style: Innovative design based on aesthetics related to production technology Main Materials: GRP (Glassfiber Reinforced Plastic), a thermosetting plastic material consisting of glass fibers impregnated with polyester resins Distinctive Design: System of "strength by form," which imparts rigidity to plastic materials through geometric configurations. Simple and elegant lines, typical of Magistretti's design, with a design concept similar to that of the Selene chair and the Chimera lamp Dimensions: Height 40cm - Width 80cm - Length 80cm Comfort: Perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality Typical Use: Ideal for indoor and outdoor environments due to GRP's resistance to impact, scratching, bending, high temperatures and weathering Design Icon: A distinctive example of 1970s Italian design, with an innovative aesthetic that exploits the potential of new materials Versatility: Suitable for both home and public environments, indoor and outdoor Current Status of Design: Recognized design icon, featured in historical collections and catalogs Additional Notes: Quoted in Maria Teresa Feraboli's bibliography: "Vico Magistretti," series "I maestri del Design," Il Sole 24 Ore editions, Milan 2011, p. 50. Also found in the 1976 Artemide S.p.A. catalog, p. 130 Vico Magistretti (1920-2006) was one of the most influential Italian designers and architects of the 20th century, known for his contributions to industrial design and modern architecture. Born in Milan and graduated from the Milan Polytechnic in 1945, he developed a style based on simplicity, elegance and functionality, reducing objects to their essential forms without sacrificing beauty and comfort. During his career he collaborated with companies such as Cassina, Artemide and Oluce, creating iconic pieces such as the Atollo lamp, the Carimate chair and the Maralunga sofa, which have become symbols of Italian design. He received numerous awards, including multiple Compasso d'Oro, and his works are exhibited in prestigious museums such as the MoMA in New York. His legacy lies in his ability to combine innovation and traditional craftsmanship, influencing generations of designers through his work and teaching. Artemide is a major Italian company specializing in the production of designer lighting: founded in 1959 by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza, it is headquartered in Pregnana Milanese, near Milan, and has become a global benchmark brand in the industry. Since its inception, Artemide has distinguished itself by producing high-quality lighting systems that combine aesthetics, technological innovation and functionality, collaborating with internationally renowned designers such as Michele De Lucchi, Richard Sapper and Karim Rashid. Among the most iconic products are the Tizio lamp by Richard Sapper, the Tolomeo series by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina, and the Artemide Tolomeo Mega...
