About the Item

Original and valuable French coffee table; the solid structure, simple but extremely elegant, is made of fine mahogany, one of the favorite woods of the Art Deco cabinetmakers; the peculiarity of the table are the finishes made with mirrors; on the top there is a single large mirror with linear grindings at the four corners, the side edges are also adorned with mirrors always finished with grindings equal to those of the top; the mahogany legs have a soft and simple design and are perfected by two grooves each, one on each side of the leg itself; the table was created between 1930 and 1935 in a cabinet-making workshop in the Parisian district of Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where, in the nearby Ile Louviers, construction timber from the upper reaches of the Seine was unloaded and stored in the district, leading to the development of wood craftsmanship; since ancient times skilled French, Flemish and German craftsmen moved to the suburb and worked as carvers, gilders, polishers, turners and cabinetmakers. With the combination of fine wood and mirrors, the master craftsmen have managed to create an extraordinary piece of furniture, refined and captivating, bright and romantic, making it versatile and easy to place in any environment. The term Art Deco derives from the diction Exposition InternationalesArtsDécoratifs et IndustrielsModernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts), held in Paris in 1925 where French refinement and decoration triumphed, applied to various categories of artistic craftsmanship, from cabinetmaking, fashion accessories, wrought iron, stained glass, jewelry, and decorations. The new style, abandons the sinuosity and the naturalistic linear formulas, preferring the geometric shapes and vague the essential and elegant forms.
