Belarti Wrought Iron Ceramic Tile Side Coffee Table, 1960s

About the Item

Belarti Belgium designed this elegantly crafted Mid-Century Modern coffee or side table in the 1960s. This cocktail table features an eye-catching ceramic tiles top using a rare turquoise-blue color that creates a beautiful contrast with stylized floral design in purple, beige-gold, and green tones. Framing and legs with ornaments are in wrought iron with a black finish patina. The artist's signature is in the right corner of the top. The coffee table is in good condition, with minor wear on the ceramic tiles, no crack, no chip, and no repair. Measurements: 47.63 in wide (121 cm) x 18.13 in deep (46 cm) x 15 in total high (38 cm). Note: This sale does not include the decoration elements. Note: Who was Belarti? It is still not completely clear! Numerous vendors confidently assert that the Belgian artist Juliette Belarti or Julien Belarti created these tiled coffee tables. However, this person does not appear to exist. The name is a short anagram for " BELgian ARTIst." Julien de Covemaeker (1927 - 2008), a ceramist who owned a ceramics and furniture workshop in Ostend, Belgium, created this acronym. First, multiple indications exist of a production that is quite similar but with different signatures. Belarti appears in lowercase or uppercase (Belarti or BELARTI). It is not unlikely that multiple individuals or artists signed under this name because it seems that different spellings have been used. Sometimes, "Belarti" turns more or less into "Bel Arti" or simply "Arti." Some pieces bear the signature J. Belarti, others Belarti alone or J. F. Belarti. Also, productions signed by J. D'asti, Adri, or De Nisco resemble many of the creations signed by Belarti. Finally, adding to the confusion, there are tables in Perignem, Belgium, with the same structure but whose ceramics are signed by Yves Rhayé. However, many experts think Belarti is likely a generic name used by several artists to describe a typical 1960s ceramic production. Thanks to Spacevintageretroblogspot, a page of the 1968 Belarti catalog contained some interesting information. It explains that several ceramicists created Belarti, a limited liability company, in May 1968 in Mechelen, Belgium. Extracts of the catalog page (translation from the original Dutch language): "And in May 1968, the N. V.* Belarti was founded, which enabled further development of what can be best described as a traditional production. Production is increasing, but everything is still handmade, and industrial counterfeiting is out of the question. To take up artistic expansion, the manufacture of all kinds of original earthenware objects, which started in 1962, was also used in 1969 by the n. v. Belarti. Slowly but surely, foreign buyers are attracted by the originality and quality of Belarti creations. The studio has transformed into a company of international stature. The small oven of pioneer times has turned into fully automatic equipment of bulky ovens. Despite the rapid expansion and fame, we still have our first customers who remained loyal throughout the company's evolution and became true friends. Thanks to them, with their knowledge of sales, we are now able to present a renewed collection here in this catalog. N. V. J. Belarti Mechelen - Belgium." * The N.V. company is the Belgian equivalent of a public limited company. The abbreviation comes from the Dutch name "Naamloze Vennootschap."
