About

In Kin & Company’s newest design, the crescent table, which premiered at sight unseen Offsite 2017, two hard and unforgiving materials, marble and steel, are gracefully molded into an interlocking form. The visible tension between the earthy rust-colored steel and the luminescent marble calls to mind the tension—and beauty—in the convergence of body and spirit. The curved steel plates rise from the ground, resolving as thin offset arcs, carving through the surface of the stone and imbuing the table with a sense of kinetic energy. The shifting planes of the crystallized marble create a dynamic canvas upon which the surface transforms from an opalescent blue to a pearly pink.

About the Maker

Kin & Company, the Brooklyn-based design and fabrication studio founded by cousins Joseph Vidich and Kira de Paola, creates contemporary metal furniture that emphasizes bold, expressive forms paired with intriguing details and rich materials—translucent marble juxtaposed with deep black patina, a delicate inlay, a precarious balance as floor meets furniture—each moment embracing the beauty of the unexpected. The partners carry their familial connection into a creative process rooted in the core principles of collaboration and exploration. Their passion for creating sophisticated, high-quality furniture began with their mutual backgrounds in fine art and was nurtured through more than 30 years of combined experience working in all facets of the design industry, including architecture and interior design. Their workflow emphasizes an integrated design and fabrication process where the act of making becomes a generative part of the design process. They cultivate in-depth knowledge of materials and the techniques used to shape those materials, attending to the precision of every detail.
