French Oval Coffee Table Vallauris Signed La Roue Ceramic & Steel circa 1960

About the Item

Oval coffee table with faience top signed Vallauris La Roue. Vallauris is a village in southeastern France. As early as the 16th century, it was inhabited primarily by potters who were already well-known locally. In the 20th century, thanks to the Massier family, the village’s fame spread nationwide. It was likely this reputation that drew the painter and sculptor Picasso to the village. After he settled there in 1947, the village attracted an increasing number of artists, including notably Roger Capron, Raymonde Leduc, and Arroyo. La Roue was a workshop that opened its doors in 1962. It was run by Alexandre and Betty Fadas. Its creations were produced by various potters and artisans from the region. Among the potters whose works were sold by La Roue were renowned master ceramists such as Robert Picault and Georges Pelletier. Many contributors did not sign their names but simply used “La Roue,” as is the case with the ceramics used for this table. La Roue had a reputation for producing the most original and highest-quality ceramics of its time. The steel used for both the legs and the table's edging gives this table an authentic industrial look. A small chip visible in the last photo, not disturbing.
