About the Item

Table designed by Gilbert Poillerat composed of a marble panel with warm tones and a part of wrought iron, heart of the work of Gilbert Poillerat. The base of the marble panel is a frieze around 13cm high, made in the length of eight circles, and in the width of four circles. In both cases, of flattened balls and aged golden color connecting the circles to each other. At the corners, four piles support the marble panel. The coffee table has four zoomorphic feet, curved and ending in small hooves caprine / capridae golden. The legs are also interconnected by a thin golden twist wrought iron. This table demonstrates first this as a Poillerat prduction by the use of wrought iron, material favored by the artist. It is inseparable from his work. The locksmith history since the Middle Ages is used by Poillerat as reference and inspiration. Technically, it is part of a particular movement to reject the standardization of furniture and objects, initiated a little over fifty years ago with the industrial revolution. Poillerat production is particularly illustrated by this quote from Paul Iribe in an article published in Furniture and Decoration to challenge the disastrous effects of the machine on the French production "the hand must take back the tools she abandoned and she does not know to use anymore. Men of eighteen to thirty years old, you will have to know, understand, love hand work, learn how to use the tool: pickaxe, hammer, plane, pencil ... " This production takes place in the historical context the Second World War, during which the monumental ironwork production slows widely, to make way for a production of interior furniture. It is during that time between the Occupation and Liberation that Poillerat become a true artist designer of the 20th century. This is a 1940s production from the fact that this table illustrates perfectly Poillerat balance between respect for tradition and commitment to innovation: he respects tradition with "perfect" the symmetry (the number of circles, the geometric) but remains in this baroquisante movement in the use of cables and zoomorphic feet. The most baroquisant furniture from the artist seems indeed to be produced before or after the Second World War.
