Gordon Russell Nest of Three Tables in walnut, Cotswold school England Ca 1950

About the Item

This is a nest of THREE hardwood, walnut tables by Gordon Russell, Broadway, Worcs, which is a town in the Cotswolds, England and dating to Circa 1950 The tables are slightly larger, but lower height than the typical size of a nested table. They have a simple form with an inset horizontal reeded edge and radiused square legs, very much in the Arts & Crafts aesthetic and with the clean well proportioned lines of Georgian furniture. The largest table is 27 Inches Wide x 18 Inches Deep x 18 Inches High. They are all in original condition and bear the makers tin plate label ‘Gordon Russell Limited, Broadway Worcs’, to the underside top. Overall a very stylish well made nest of coffee tables from a quality British designer. The Russell Brand from the Cotswold School. Sir Gordon Russell shaped the history of 20th-century British design, utilising the design essence from the arts and crafts movement to design a modern, minimalist furniture style. He was passionate about high standards of craftsmanship but also accepted machinery as a means of reaching out to a wider market without compromising quality. This combination of functionality with design made Sir Gordon Russell a pioneer in creating furniture to suit modern life. After WWII his furniture company successfully adapted and modernised to produce a well designed range of pieces, as well as bespoke pieces for special commissions.
