Large Mexican Cedar Mortar Sculpted Aged Wood Glass Top Table Mexico, 1940s

About the Item

Large Mexican Cypress mortar shaped from a single piece cut from the trunk of a large tree. From the faded color of the wood and the loss of paint and the losses to the sides and top edges I would guess it is old maybe 80+ years. The weathered surfaces, the voids, the worm holes and the skillful carved arcs that shape the four corners add to its overall appeal. The piece is stamped made in Mexico on one side. While there are open separations the mortar is solid and functional. Overall an interesting piece.

  • Genaro Alvarez Mosaic Glass Tile Cocktail Table Mexico, circa 1955
    By Genaro Alvarez
    Located in Camden, ME
Classic glass tile mosaic coffee table from the Mexico City Studio of the noted artist Genaro Alvarez dating from the mid-1950s. There are three different compositional designs in the creation of this mosaic top. The first is the abstract pictorial of a universe of white, crème and grey surrounding a "Black Hole" with a galaxy of yellow and black swirling along its serpentine "lariat" of a double ended orbit path marked by gold tiles. The second is the consistent placement of the background tiles in concise repetitive patterns of concentric half circular arcs. The third is the placement of gold mirrored tiles adding points of sparkle over the entire surface as the intersection points of a grid, a very interesting and sophisticated addition. The integration of these three design elements adds an unexpected complexity and cohesion to the overall composition. Genaro Alvarez is recognized as one Mexico's great mid century masters of mosaic design of his era and had an international reputation and clientele with several major architectural installations here in the United States. • 6 Piece Glass Mosaic Tile Coffee Table Genaro Alvarez Cosmic, Mexico, 1950s
    By Genaro Alvarez
    Located in Camden, ME
Six Piece Studio Mosaic table by Genaro Alvarez composed of. Intricate inlaid glass mosaic designs based on 6 zodiac constellations, on six triangular, interchangeable mahogany bases created at the Genaro Alvarez's Studio in Mexico City in the 1950s. Alvarez studied under artists Carlos Ruano Llopis and Diego Rivera. Employing a style he called symbolic expressionism.Alvarez was commissioned to do large murals in Mexico as well as a major commissions in Chicago, Kansas City and other cities in the United States. He did murals in private men's clubs along the the California Coast. This table's mosaic is composed of a variety of glass tile with the most dramatic being silver mirror glass tile outlines of the zodiac and outlines of stars floating within an earth toned background of dark mocha, sienna, ochre, crème and white Terrazzo with traditional Aztec symbols of Navajo red tile with random red tile pieces all add to this sophisticated design work. Each of the six triangular tables is edged in polished brass with brass legs measuring 23.5 by 23.5 by 23.5 inches. I have photographed the table in a variety of configurations and as a stacked grouping. It is intentionally modular, stackable and very versatile in its design. From Don Shoemaker dot com.
