Midcentury Glass and Wood Italian Coffee Table after Gio Ponti, 1950s

About the Item

Coffee or smoking tables attributed to Gio Ponti, Italy, 1950s. The table has been professionally restored and is in wonderful conditions. This table exudes a luxuriant light, given by the perfect combination of wood and glass, that has been fundamental in Gio Ponti's design. This table is perfect for a colourful and elegant living room or for a wooden kitchen. Measures (cm) : diameter - 62 height - 53 Gio Ponti (1891-1979) was trained as an architect but was also a poet, a painter, a designer of exhibitions, glass, lightning and of course furniture. He is perhaps most known for being one of the architects of the Pirelli tower in Milan, at one time the tallest building in Europe. But above all, Ponti was responsible for the renewal of Italian architect and decorative arts during the 20th century.

    Round coffee table realized in walnut wood with metal details, the tabletop presents an elegant circular decorative motif. In 1927, Ponti started his first architectural office, together with Emilio Lancia, and in 1928 he started the magazine Domus, which is still regarded as one of the most influential European magazines for architecture and design. He was also very influential during the period as a curator of the Milan Triennale.
