Paul Evans Monumental Sculpted Bronze and Glass Coffee Table, Signed, 1974

About the Item

Paul Evans (1931–1987) A sculptural brutalist coffee table by Studio Craft Movement leader Paul Evans, in bronze. The architectural base —comprised of textural interlocking facets vigorously hand sculpted with contrasting motifs— rises like a spectral, labyrinthine cityscape. It supports a rectangular 3/4 thick inch glass top. This powerful piece is the product of an innovative technique Evans developed to create massive works of bronze slabs that remained light enough to juxtapose, strikingly, like Jenga blocks. A thick impasto of bronze was cold-sprayed onto the carved wood substructure and then intricately molded and sculpted by hand. Unlike many of the lines Evans designed for Directional, which were produced in large quantity, these hand-wrought bronze tables were created in limited number. The result is equal parts functional object and work of art.  Signed "PE" and dated "74."
