17th Century Spanish Drop-Leaf Table

About the Item

Measures: height : 80 cm Length : 83 cm Full length : 108 cm Depth : 40 cm Walnut inlaid with ligh coloured wood This original and clever walnut table stands on rotating feet. Four turned-wood legs, linked by a circular spacer, support the massive rectangular tabletop. A finely carved drawer is hidden in the belt. Once opened, two identical additional legs uphold the curved flaps. The surface of the tabletop has now doubled in size. Once closed the table is then very easy to manipulate. The tabletop is enriched by an inlaid decor. The lozenge motif layout emulates ermine. This decor is also present on the table leaves. A fine example of a table showing both functional and theatrical qualities. It expresses a society where splendour could coexist with comfort.
