About the Item

A very fine French 19th-20th century Louis XVI style mahogany and kingwood parquetry gilt bronze mounted three-drawer free-standing wall or sofa console table, after a model in the manner as Guillaume Benneman with ormolu mounts with lion-mask garland-hung handles and an intricate ormolu trim detail throughout, on square tapering legs each headed with floral festoons, the floor base with a parquetry panel and Brocatelle Violette Marble Top, by Mâison Forest - Ameublements forest - 31 rue Cambacérès * 17 rue La Boëtie – Paris, circa 1900. Height: 37 3/4 inches (95.9 cm). Width: 66 3/4 inches (169.6 cm). Depth: 17 3/8 inches (44.2 cm). Guillaume Beneman or Benneman (1750 after 1811) was a prominent Parisian ébéniste, one of several of German extraction, working in the early neoclassical Louis XVI style, which was already fully developed when he arrived in Paris. Beneman arrived in Paris already trained, he was settled in the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine when he was received master in 1785 by royal command, and rapidly became the last of the royal cabinet-makers before the French Revolution, working under the direction (and on occasion to the designs) of the sculptor-entrepreneur Jean Hauré, fournisseur de la cour ("supplier to the Court"). In the service of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne he delivered works of irreproachable refinement to the royal residences into the first years of the Revolution. A mark of his humble condition and dependence upon the patronage of the Garde-Meuble is the payment to him in 1788 of 1527 livres, to enable him to purchase workshop tools for 17 craftsmen. Le Maison Forest was established at in Paris at 14 rue Pierre-Picard in 1883 and also at 31 rue Cambaceres. The firm was renown for their production of high quality furnishings inspired by models of period French Master ébénistes in the Louis XIV, XV and XVI styles as well as Empire style with fine gilt-bronze mounts, parquetry and marquetry.
