The beautiful color and carving on this unusual antique Austrian corner console table highlight its origin from the Rococo period circa 1750. The lovely reflective quality of the painted and gilded finish emphasize the sensuous movement of the carving seen on the entire corner console. The essence of the Rococo was on light, bright, natural motifs that echoed and related to the lushness of the natural world. After the strict formality and rigid protocol at the court of Louis XIV a more relaxed and enjoyable design aesthetic took hold under the new King, Louis XV. As furnishings under Louis XIV (particularly at the Palace of Versailles) were extensions of the architecture (solid, regal and symmetrical) when Louis XV ascended to the throne a new manner of decoration appeared, one that appealed to the sense of delight found in the natural world. Curved lines, not straight, became desirable in both interior architectural decoration as well as in the furnishings created for these new spaces. Please look closely at this antique Austrian corner console table to see the combination of elements made famous during the mid-18th century Rococo. The curved façade has an open medallion in the centre while the edge of the apron follows an asymmetrical line that leads lyrically to each of the front legs. Both legs feature a series of "C" scrolls with an undulating line and are joined by a horizontal stretcher featuring a bold carved element in the same scale as that used on the apron. In order to stand freely the console has a back leg with the same painted finish but no gilding. The shaped top has a hand-painted faux marble finish chosen to replicate the original marble-top.
