French Louis XVI Painted Gesso & Giltwood Console Table with Shaped Marble Top
About the Item
Exceptional French Louis XVI console table, circa 1785-1795, with original paint and gesso surface. The carved wood frame features the refined neoclassical lines Marie Antoinette’s era was known for - straight tapered fluted legs, shaped serpentine front, and architectural symmetry vs earlier rococo curves.
The frieze is the star: high-relief carving of a quiver of arrows crossed with a torch, tied with ribbon and surrounded by oak leaves and acanthus. As you can see in the close-ups, the gesso and paint have aged to a soft sage/cream/gilt patina with natural crazing and wear. Under the paint you see hints of earlier gilt layers, proving it’s original gilt finish.
Legs are fluted and tapered with block feet, connected by an elegant X-stretcher with central oval cartouche carved with acanthus and shells. Topped with the original shaped white Carrara marble top with gray veining that follows the bombe front edge. The marble has beautiful surface wear consistent with 19th Century use.
