About the Item

A masterpiece of design and craftsmanship, the “Zuma” console was created for “AD Collections 2016.” The Centre des Monuments Nationaux hosted this decorative arts event organized by the Magazine AD, in partnership with the Mobilier National at the Hôtel de la Marine (formerly the Crown’s furniture depository). This exclusive piece is part of the “De Fontanieu Trilogy” named after the first two general controllers of the Crown’s Furniture Depository Hôtel du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne from 1718-1784, Elliott Barnes spotlights three singular objects from his “private furniture depository”, which will become part of the collection Elliott Barnes Paris – Exceptional Furniture. This trilogy is the result of a profound reflection on materials and French craftsmanship. Like musical instruments in a trio, each imparts its own timbre. However, once grouped together, the three pieces generate a rhythmic, multi-textured environment upon which a soloist may accompany an intimate moment of the day. Elliott Barnes’s creative process is prompted by a stream of consciousness uniting the common denominators of often imperceptible details and peculiarities from various possibilities and impossibilities. It explores the familiar and the popular, and through narrative and abstraction proposes objects that are recognizable yet novel. The openness of his approach has created unique modern narrative solutions for apartments, villas, hotels, restaurants, and clubs all-over the world, as well as furniture collections that have been met with international acclaim. As a result, each one of his projects stands on its own. Visually speaking, Elliott’s work is of its time. Even though some details of his objects and may reference or incorporate elements from other periods and styles, the overall feeling is resolutely contemporary. The key to his expression is rooted in refined detailing. The correct articulation and arrangement of details gives a voice to any object. Elliott selects materials in a way that connects a work to a place, a moment or an emotion, while simultaneously leaving room for his creations to stand the test of time. Recently, Elliott has begun to use the acronym ACT (art, craft and technology) in reference to the execution of his furniture and objects. He confesses to being preoccupied by the ‘formal’ beauty of things - their practicality, their technicality, their functionality and thus, their beauty. He is a firm believer that the harmonization of these qualities results in work that is perennial. The Zuma console from the “California Dreaming” collection was directly inspired by the sunny coastline of the southwestern United States. Shaped like an imaginary wave, the console is enhanced with an organic finish «Tangleef» developed from seaweed by Elliott Barnes. The piece’s exceptional construction is entirely due to the expertise of Lamellux’s talented joiners. Amidst the successive waves that lap the beaches of his native L.A., the designer observed seaweed fronds, and then called on the savoir-faire of L'Atelier Tourtoulou, to use them as a surprising and fascinating finish. The designer: Elliott Barnes is an interior designer who marches to the beat of his own drum. After completing his education in architecture and urban design from Cornell University, Elliott left behind his native home of Los Angeles to explore the design world in Paris after a chance encounter with legendary interior designer, Andrée Putman. Following seven years as director of her firm, Elliott branched out on his own and, in 2004, established Elliott Barnes Interiors as a vehicle to express his own view for the creation of forms, surfaces and interior spaces.
