18th Century French Secretaire/ Desk Called "Bonheur Du Jour", Louis XVI Period



18th century French secretary desk / Secretaire called "Bonheur du jour" - Louis XVI  Elegant secretary called "Bonheur du jour" with black leather top. 18th century furniture, Louis XVI period and style. Dimensions (height / width / depth): 91 / 73 / 44 cm Shape: Straight, mounted on 4 sheathed feet with ringed sabots. Openings:  In front: A long drawer and a pull revealing a writing case. In tiers : 4 small drawers - 2 rows of 2 drawers. Ornamentation: Gilded draw knobs and key entries representing a medallion topped by a pleated ribbon bow with falling garlands on the sides. Apron with a Louis XVI style base with a horizontal cyma and a scroll and foliage motif of myrtle or laurel. Marquetry: Marquetry and framing of nets. >> What is a "Bonheur du jour" ("Happiness of the day") ? This small piece of furniture appeared in the 18th century during the Transition period (between Louis XV and Louis XVI reigns). Originally, it was called "small stepped table", or "high stepped writing table", but these names were quickly forgotten. Indeed, the Bonheur du jour being a stepped piece of furniture with drawers and sometimes various small hiding places, the ladies of the time could hide letters and small objects which were their happiness of the day, their "bonheur du jour".
