Brazilian Desk by Geraldo de Barros in Rosewood and Black Steel

About

Geraldo de Barros, desk, white formica, rosewood metal, Brazil, 1950s. This delicate desk is by designed by the Brazilian modernist designer Geraldo de Barros. The most distinct part of this desk is the back were a display of black metal rods are placed below one another creates a dynamic visual element in this otherwise modest desk. This desk has three white formica drawers. This well proportioned desk features clear lines, and functional spaces such as drawers and cabinets. Geraldo de Barros (1923-1998) was a painter, photographer and graphic and product designer. He was experimenting with new forms and aesthetics during the forties. In 1952 he founded the Ruptura Group where excessive formalism was the core of their ideals. Barros believed that it was his task to educate the taste of the masses. In his company Hobjeto Barros combined his two ideals by standardizing the production processes of home and office furniture. His furniture introduced innovative techniques such as the injection of rigid structuraed polyurthane and cut and lacquered chipboard.
