About the Item
Important Late French Art Deco / Mid-Century Modern Neoclassical double level writing table / desk in Ebonized solid Sycamore by Leon Jallot, 1936. This rare, early modern piece was constructed to allow transparency, open-ness and light to play an architectural role. Thus, the desk is composed of the upper level desk top and an open lower level consisting of a larger drawer and open space shelving on both sides. The lower level is composed to create an open architectural, cantilevered effect. The entire piece is supported by 4 carved, round, rusticated legs that counterbalance the sobriety of the upper levels. The entire piece has been ebonized.
Provenance: The desk comes from the Faculty of Franco-Britanico Relations, Cite Universitaire, Paris, circa 1936.
