Italian Mid-Century Executive Desk by Vittorio Dassi, 1950s

About the Item

An exceptionally refined Italian executive desk designed by Vittorio Dassi in the 1950s, a piece that perfectly reflects the sophisticated dialogue between architectural modernism and fine Italian craftsmanship associated with the circle of Gio Ponti. The desk is distinguished by its elegant floating top, visually suspended above the drawer cabinets through sculptural side supports that lend the composition remarkable lightness despite its generous proportions. The softly rounded edges and tapered structural lines reveal the highly architectural approach typical of Dassi’s most refined productions. Crafted in richly figured wood veneer with warm honey and deep walnut tones, the piece displays an extraordinary attention to proportion and material contrast. The large top is surmounted by an original blue glass surface, an iconic and highly sophisticated detail that enhances the desk’s refined executive character while creating subtle chromatic tension with the warmth of the wood. The desk features two symmetrical pedestal drawer units, each fitted with four drawers, offering ample storage while preserving the clean geometric rhythm of the design. The drawer fronts are characterized by elegantly recessed horizontal profiles, emphasizing the linearity and craftsmanship of the piece. Particularly noteworthy are the slender legs terminating in original brass sabots and adjustable brass feet, details that add both visual refinement and a sense of levitation to the structure. Recently restored and polished using traditional shellac techniques (gommalacca), the desk preserves the depth and luminosity of the veneer while respecting the authenticity of the original materials and cabinetmaking methods. The blue glass top is new. The piece remains in excellent vintage condition overall, showing only minor signs of age and use consistent with its period, and is ready to use. A rare and highly decorative executive desk that embodies the elegance and innovation of Italian mid-century design at its finest.
