Louis XV Style Lacquered and Gilt Bronze-Mounted Bureau Plat

About the Item

Fine, French bureau plat or writing table desk. Made in the grand Louis XV taste featuring bronze mounts with white lacquered frame. With original key. Fine rocaille motif moulded mounts throughout, one side with three, deep space pull-out drawers, and the reverse with an identical facade to match on cabriole legs with bronze mounts at knees and toes. The bureau is complete with original bronze embellishments but has a beautiful aged patina.

    Italian Neoclassical style freestanding slant front desk, in the manner of Giuseppe Maggiolini, late 19th c. Exquisite marquetry veneer in rosewood, satinwood and other decorative woods. The rectangular top with inlaid marquetry foliate sits above a sloping fall front centered by a foliate cartouche and corner cartouches, the kneehole. Open to reveal a nicely fitted interior with an arrangement of open compartments flanked by two short drawers and an inlaid hinged writing surface. Below this there are two large graduated drawers. Side panels inlaid with conforming scrollwork all rising on four elegant squared tapering legs finished with the original brass castor cups. The shape and the inlaid designs are similar to those on pieces of furniture produced by Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814), the foremost cabinet-maker in late 18th-century Milan.     A Louis XV style gilt-bronze mounted marquetry cylinder bureau. Stamped to the reverse of the bronze mounts 'PB'. The top of Sarrancolin marble above a tambour with a central mount depicting Minerva. The marquetry depicting allegories of Geography and Astronomy. The interior has a green-leather covered pull out writing slide below an arrangement of drawers and cubby-holes. The back and sides intricately inlaid with marquetry of military and Maritime trophies. The sides with pullout leather-lined slides. The kneehole with a frieze drawer and three short drawers to the sides. France, Circa 1880. This desk is inspired by the bureau de roi, begun by Jean-François Oeben and completed by Jean-Henri Riesener for Louis XV in 1769 (now at Versailles) featuring similar marquetry panels, as well as a bureau à cylindre, also by Riesener, formerly thought to have been made for King Stanislas of Poland, but now identified as being supplied to the comte d'Orsay (now in the Wallace Collection).
