Mid Century Modern Oak Writing Desk by Henning Kjærnulf, 1960s

About the Item

A Danish oak pedestal writing desk designed by Henning Kjærnulf, bearing the original EG Kvalitetsmøbel label on the underside — "Design Arkitekt H. Kjærnulf." Constructed throughout in pale, limed oak, the desk displays exceptionally strong ray figuring across its top surface. Two banks of three drawers flank a central kneehole, with the top drawer on each side retaining its original plain ring key. All drawers are mounted with original cast metal ring pulls featuring a detailed, textured relief on round backplates — beautifully patinated from decades of use. The overhanging top is finished with a softly rounded edge profile. Just below, protruding horizontally from the upper apron at the corner joints, are exposed round-headed oak joinery pegs — an honest, structural detail characteristic of Kjærnulf's mid-century work. The sturdy oak legs feature turned ring sections at the structural joints and a square mid-section, braced by a full box stretcher for absolute stability. The reverse of the piece is fully finished, detailed with a long, low open bookshelf that allows the desk to be placed freestanding and utilized from all sides. Generous in scale, practical, and full of character.
