Dining room set with round table and four matching chairs, solid elm, leather, France, 1970s This French dining set, constructed entirely from solid elm, exemplifies a 1970s blend of artisanal craft and modular design thinking. The shapes are clean and modernist, but the materials speak to an appreciation for nature and longevity. Nothing here is extraneous. Every curve, joint, and surface seems to serve both function and form, rooted in a period when furniture was shifting away from ornament and back toward essence. Both the round table and matching chairs are shaped with a striking honesty to their materials. There is a tactile directness in the way the wood is used, emphasized by the visible knots and grain patterns that animate the surface with organic character. The table is defined by its circular top and cylindrical legs; four of them, placed not at the extremities but slightly inset, giving the piece a grounded yet airy presence. The chairs’ frames are formed from continuous, squared-off loops of elm that bend into an assertive profile. The meticulously designed backrest with subtle curvature is low and minimal, echoing the curvature of the table’s legs while maintaining the boxy logic of the seat’s architecture.
