About the Item

This is an elegant dining set comprising an antique Regency dining table, dating from circa 1820 and a set of eight vintage Chippendale Revival dining chairs. The table is of rectangular form with rounded corners and reeded edge. It is raised on twin "gun barrel" turned columns on quadruple swept sabre leg bases which are fitted with brass lion's paw toes and castors. It has three leaves that can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion . The table top is of beautiful flame mahogany and there is no mistaking the fine craftsmanship of this handsome dining table which is certain to become a treasured addition to your furniture collection, and a talking point with guests at meal times. The set of eight Chippendale Revival dining chairs comprises six side chairs and a pair of armchairs. These gorgeous mahogany chairs have drop in seats that have been reupholstered in a wonderful crimson fabric. Fashioned from flame mahogany they have a wonderful rich colour with a striking grain and good patina. Each chair features fine carving and has acanthus leaf carving on the front legs which terminate in paw and ball feet. The armchairs are particularly striking with each arm terminating in a carving of a lion's face complete with mane. All the chairs in this set have an intricate interwoven pierced back featuring lovely carved decoration.. Its east wing was added in the 19th century. Meanwhile, the magnificent Temple Garden was built in the 1840s. The Grade II* listed property's formal gardens include a temple and orangery. Flame Mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.
