About the Item

A superb midcentury Danish teak extending dining table and 8 x Model 75 chair dining set designed by Niels Otto Møller. Originally designed in the 1950s, this set was produced in the 1960s and owned from new by the same family. The set is in very good vintage condition and has some point in its life been beautifully restored. The table has been French polished and the extending leaves show a good match to the rest of the table where in many cases the top is usually faded and the leaves darker. The dining table extends by the use of separate extending leaves from a compact 4 seat table to accommodate 6, with one leaf, or 8 with two – as shown in the images. The light steel grey linen upholstery is in excellent, virtually unmarked condition, being a later change to the original design which would have been produced with paper cord seating. Both the table and chairs are in mid stained, well figured teak with the chairs being marginally darker in colour than the table. The table tops, frame and chairs show minor age related marks and patina, just as one would expect, but nothing that detracts from the presentation of the set. A very comfortable and adaptable set that is both stylish and impressively understated, benefiting as it does from Møllerr’s trademark eye for sculptural detail and proportion. Niels Otto Møller was born in 1920 and is recognised as one of the founding fathers of Danish midcentury and Mid-Century Modern design. Along with many of his contemporaries his craftsmanship stemmed from his cabinet making background which led him to establish his own production company, JL Møllers Møbelfabrik, in his hometown of Århus in 1944. Known for his careful selection of materials and use of traditional wood working methods he became a prolific midcentury designer. This allowed his company to rapidly expand and by the mid-1950s he was exporting to both Germany and the United States whilst also servicing the growing Scandinavian market. His style is instantly recognisable and features soft curves represented in sculptural forms in teak, rosewood, oak and walnut. As such his designs, and in particular the earlier examples of his work, are much sought after by collectors and interior designers where they justifiably command high prices. All his designs were produced by his own company and that still continues today with the company having been passed to his two sons Jorgen Henrik Møller and Jens Ole Møller after his death in 1982. Working in rich woods to create durable furniture that is today recognized for its elegant simplicity and solid craftsmanship, Niels Otto Møller was one of the original designers of the famed Scandinavian modern movement that swept through postwar Europe and, eventually, the United States.

At the age of 19, Møller studied to be a cabinetmaker, gaining a strong affinity for working with natural materials. He furthered his education at the local design academy in his hometown of Århus, Denmark, where, in 1944, he established J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. Møller’s first chair — called simply No. 1 — was introduced in 1946. In 1961, he expanded his thriving business by opening a factory in Højbjerg, producing his popular dining chairs as well as armchairs, lounge chairs, tables and more. Rather than unnecessary ornamentation, he focused on a warm and more minimalist approach that valued function over form. Nearly all of his pieces, from the 1962 Model 78 chair to his simple tables, feature gentle curves formed from woods such as rosewood and teak (a sought-after material among furniture designers of the time).

Though the furnishings boasted a contemporary look and were a departure from the ornate designs of the recent past, Møller’s company crafted all of them using traditional, age-old techniques. For instance, the 1959 Model 77 side chair’s seat is handwoven using a single 425-foot-long cord. Today, the Danish furniture designer’s refined pieces continue to be as sought after as they were when mid-century modernism was in full swing.

The company, still based in its original factory, remains a family business, now headed by Møller’s granddaughter, Kirsten Møller. Along with new pieces, they craft the celebrated original designs, from raw wood to finished assembled products, that made J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik a renowned name in Danish Modern design.
