Art Deco Bibliotek Dining Table attributed to Eliel Saarinen
About the Item
This style of trestle dining table was referred to in the Nordic countries as a "bibliotek" or library table. it is equally at home in a dining room, a library or as a fantastic writing table / desk. There are two leaves included. They are not of the same masurbjork wood (impossible now to get in this quality and quantity), but the color of the leaves does blend in with the table as a whole.
The workmanship of this table and its materials is magnificent. Note the carefully matched panels of golden masurbjork (birch root), the intricate carvings of medieval knights (very similar to those guarding Saarinen's Helsinki Railway Station built in 1906) and the high contrast of golden and dark birch wood - seen again in Saarinen's furniture designed in the United States in the late 1920's.
While Saarinen's son Eero went on to become the more famous of the two, it was Eliel who could be considered the grandfather of Nordic Art Deco design - much like Jacques Emile Ruhlmann was considered to be the grandfather of French Art Deco.
