About

One of a kind. A river of molten gold flowing along the base of a canyon of irregular and undulating Walnut cliffs. With its live edges turned inwards, this single, wide bookmatch of Walnut generates a window of negative space filled with brass inlay. Whorls of mirrored grain from deepest, darkest heartwood to palest cream sapwood capture the beauty which underlies the growth history of a single tree, the doubling, bookmatching of these patterns, as in an inkblot test, generates near-symmetrical apparitions. Six handcut and hand-set Walnut butterflies support the tabletop asymmetrically The modified trestle base has handcut wedged through tenon joints connecting a high center bar set up against the underside of the tabletop, which removes its possible interference with knees or chairs. Single board pillars support a sharply geometric base design with long, solid hand-set brass bar 'feet' pinned traditionally with handmade brass pins. The table very comfortably fits 8 chairs, but can accommodate additional place settings depending on the size of the selected chairs. Underlying the selection of materials is the juxtaposition between the dark wood and the bright brass, which is un-lacquered to patina over time but, upon request, can be clear coated for permanent brightness. In a glade of ferns, the Walnut tree which provided the striking bookmatch at the center of this table grew just a few miles away from our Hudson Valley workshop; through what is generally termed 'urban salvage', or perhaps 'countryside salvage' in our case, we kept this tree from a fire-wood fate. Detailed measurements: 109" (9'1") long 37 3/4" wide 29 3/4" high tabletop is 1 1/8" thick Each base pillar is 13 1/2" wide Along the floor, the base is 31 1/2" wide Each brass foot is 1 1/2" by 1/2" bar Between the two pillars is 78" long There is a 16" overhang on each end There is a 12" overhang on each long side The crevice of brass is about 1" at its widest point All our dining tables are one-off designs where the wood’s story and individuality are celebrated; curating the placement of book matches, mirror reflections of grain is the center piece of our work, and certainly is the case in our tables. Clarity of shape for the base meets wide expanses of matched wood on the top, setting up a compelling interweaving of design and wild, undulating grain movement. The history of each tree is written into its grain; we chose to frame and display this history in clear, streamlined compositions. A table with similar design notations and material placement can be customized for your space with unique bookmatches and a scale fit to your home or office. Please be in touch with us if you would like to discuss custom work. Most of the pieces we create at Moran Woodworked Furniture are commissioned works. For us, the beauty of commissioned work is that it is bespoke to your space and evolves out of a relationship we build with you over time. Furniture is both an aesthetic object and one that must fulfill its function, so the finishes we use reflect beauty and durability equally, without compromising a consciousness towards our environment. We believe the natural beauty of wood is best displayed without the application of stains. Layer by layer, we hand rub our clear tung oil based finishes into the wood. Our finishes preserve the natural color, luminance and touch of the wood grain. They provide a strong, low maintenance, ring-free and environmentally friendly surface. Our furniture is handcrafted from wood with unique stories, shared through traditional joinery and a considered modern aesthetic. Each piece comes with a history of the tree and details of the design. While designed jointly by the two of us, Celia Gibson & Michael Moran, our woodwork and metalwork, from turned legs to handcut joints, is built entirely by Michael in our Hudson Valley workshop. We are proud to say a donation is made to the Arbor Day Foundation for each piece of furniture we build; these donations plant trees and support educational programs.

View Profile
In operation since 2004, at Moran Woodworked Furniture we are committed to honoring the natural beauty of wood through traditional craftsmanship, the responsible selection of materials and a modern approach to design. We—Michael Moran and Celia Gibson—design and build each unique object one piece at a time, cutting every joint, chisel in hand, in our Hudson Valley home and workshop.

From standing tree to finished furniture, our vision relies on an immersive, hands on participation through each considered part of the process. Our bespoke and limited edition furniture begins with the wood we choose to work with: responsible wood. Our wood tells a story, and its history—where it stood and why it came down—is written in its grain and marks an obligation for us to use it thoughtfully. This wood’s journey with us begins with the assistance of individuals—arborists, homeowners, millers—who share a commitment to our environment.

A collaboration is at work: natural characteristics, idiosyncrasies of individual boards drive our design decisions just as our designs inform the wood we consider for a project. We intend that each functional work of art is a composition brought to life by the judicious selection and placement of responsible wood. This collaboration assures longevity by employing time-tested joinery meant to last several life times, offering a flexibly over time in changing conditions. We hope our compositions reflect a sense of timelessness seen through a modern lens.
