Danish Teak Flip-Flap Oval Dining Table by Dyrlund, Expands 64" to 98"

About the Item

The oval version of the Dylund Flip-Flap Table is a legend. Calling something in this industry "rare", is typically an eye-rolling cliche, but this massive ellipse is a unicorn. Moreover, you'll never find one in this condition. What makes this table so special? Let’s start with Dyrlund's outstanding reputation for quality, evident in the choice of what appears to me several teak species selected for the tabletop, leaves and base. The expansion mechanics of the leaves are nothing short of genius. The tabletop starts as a 64 1/8" x 34 7/8" oval and expands to a 51 3/4" x 98 1/2" oval. The increase is substantial and because of the obvious practicality, this is not a novelty table by any means. Each of the curved extensions "flap" open with solid chrome hinges that add a touch of modern, industrial style. This stunning teak tabletop with fiery cathedral grain is supported by a square teak pedestal base. The engineering of this table cannot be overstated, solidifying the table as a favorite among collectors and party-throwers alike. An exceptional showpiece of Danish modern mastery, this Dyrlund “Flip-Flap” oval dining table is nearly mythical in rarity when found in such refined condition. It stands as both grand in scale and exquisite in engineering—a kind of landmark piece for collectors who prize function as much as form. Crafted in richly grained teak, the tabletop reveals fiery cathedral patterns that catch light and shift with perspective. The expansion leaves deploy via solid chrome hinges, not just functional but also design elements that add shine and contrast to the warm organic wood. The top rests on a pedestal base of solid teak, squared and substantial, providing structural integrity to the sweeping oval surface above. This example has been professionally refinished, with the tabletop and base restored to bring out the depth and clarity of the wood. The leaves remain original and in excellent condition, opening smoothly on their chrome hinges. As with most vintage expandable designs, slight variations in leaf alignment or subtle height differences may be perceptible, though these are minimal and typical of authentic mid-century construction. The Dyrlund Flip-Flap table is celebrated as one of the great Danish dining designs. Its compact oval form works beautifully in moderately scaled rooms while still reading as a centerpiece, and when extended it becomes a dramatic stage for entertaining. The rarity of the oval configuration, combined with the presence of all original leaves and intact mechanics, makes this example particularly desirable. In an interior, the table pairs elegantly with warm woods, brass or chrome lighting, sculptural chairs, or textured surfaces like stone and wool. It radiates the Danish modern ideals of material honesty, thoughtful engineering, and sculptural beauty. More than a dining surface, it is functional architecture—an investment in design heritage and an heirloom for decades to come. Restoration: VERY VERY GOOD restored condition.
