'Delfi' Marble Dining Table by Marcel Breuer and Carlo Scarpa for Gavina, Italy

About the Item

This incredible 'Delfi' dining table designed by Carlo Scarpa and Marcel Breuer is composed of two sculptural Carrara marble bases and a matching thick rectangular marble top which has inset pins that fit into the bases to increase the stability and security of the table, produced in Italy by Gavina. The 'Delfi' table, which was part of the 'Ultrarazionale' collection, was born from a collaboration between two of the leading names in 20th century design. Carlo Scarpa, who designed 58 buildings and numerous furniture designs during his time, earning reputation for his mastery of detailing and bold use of materials. And Marcel Breuer, who built his name at the Bauhaus designing the Wassily and Cesca chairs, both became icons of mid-century design. The 'Delfi' table was designed around 1968 / 1969 and was based on a prior Rationalist model created by Marcel Breuer in the 1930s. The incredible architectural details of the two monolithic sculptured legs are reminiscent of classical Roman architecture, while the entirety of the design juxtaposes with Modern sensibility. This 'Delfi' white Cararra marble dining or conference table would work great in a Post-Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. MEASUREMENTS: H 29" x W 83" x D 34.75" Marble top thickness: 1.5" CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition with only very minor wear. Some small chips to the marble on the legs, mostly concentrated where the top meets the legs - these areas area not noticeable unless you are sitting underneath the table top. Also some minor chips to the bottom of the legs, also only noticeable upon close inspection. Top only has very light hard to see scratches. Overall the table is in excellent vintage condition and is extremely attractive and presentable and ready for immediate use in a high-end luxury location.

    Located in Los Angeles, CA
A jaw dropping monumental granite slab and steel dining table by famed Los Angeles architect Anthony Lumsden - custom designed and crafted for his Los Angeles home in the 1970s. Sleek, modern yet a subtle statement piece, partially due to its large size for such heavy materials, but also for its vibrant deep granite veining which reflects light in a shimmering fashion. The thick and large granite slab is heavy with no-doubt, the large chromed steel frame is also very heavy in its own regard - a sign of the quality materials he used. To re-create this staggering piece today would be costly and painfully difficult. Acquiring this dining table, which would also make an incredible conference table as well, is a great opportunity for a collector or architecture aficionado to own something truly unique and special - and something that will stand the test of time. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Anthony Lumsden was a famed American architect most noted for his sculptural futuristic designs with numerous projects in Southern California such as the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant, often seen in Hollywood films and television shows such as Star Trek Next Generation...
