Antique French Louis XV Style Dining Table with Breche D’Alep Marble Top
Located in Dallas, TX
This French Louis XV style dining table from the late 1800s has a sinuously hand carved wooden base with a breche d’alep marble top. Breche d’alep is a type of clastic (composed of old rock fragments) stone that was mined in the South of France and was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. At almost two inches thick, the dense and colorful marble top has several indicators of a Louis XV style table, such as the marble projecting beyond the wooden apron below and having a stylish fore-edge (quarter-round surmounted by a cavetto molding). The bottom of the apron has similarly shaped round molding creating an appealing visual pairing with the highly curved legs and stretcher. The volute S-scroll legs have a large downward facing acanthus leaf on each knee and terminate in scrolled feet raised on blocks. The X-shaped stretcher has a series of seamless and elegant C- and S-scolls adorned with acanthus leaves and grooved volutes. The central finial is embellished with a floral medallion. The beautiful color of the breche d’alep marble (yellow mixed with brown, red and gray fragments) will add interest to any room it is placed in. This classic French dining table...
