About the Item

Called the "Bronze Lug" Hand-sculpted base is cast in bronze, then hand-polished to a mirror finish. Live edge black walnut slab top Bret Cavanaugh is a modern craftsman and designer with a penchant for working with natural materials. A Hunterdon County, New Jersey native, Cavanaugh began his career after years of exploring various modalities including wood carving, leatherwork, metal fabrication, welding, antique car restoration, and culinary arts. In addition to learning from mentors and being self-taught, Cavanaugh draws his inspiration from the postwar area modern furniture makers of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The successful debut of his first solo show in 2006 garnered attention of his innovative style, prompting future shows and the subsequent opening of Bret Cavanaugh Modern Design, his retail store based in Frenchtown, New Jersey in 2012. Today, Cavanaugh brings his love for old world craftsmanship with modern design to create timeless furnishings for today’s contemporary home. The Designer Bret Cavanaugh is an innovator whose work exhibits a style that’s unmistakable his own. Cavanaugh grew up in an artistic family and was continually surrounded by opportunities to create. Cavanaugh sites his earliest influences coming from spending much of his youth around a neighborhood antique car restoration shop. “I loved being around people who were always building and creating,” says Cavanaugh, “It helped me realize at a very early age how much I liked to make things too.” Cavanaugh quickly transitioned from simple wood carvings to metal fabrication. At the age of fourteen, he assembled a Triumph Bonneville motorcycle from an engine and frame. His passion to create eventually led him to pursue culinary school at Johnson & Wales University in Providence. Though he loved to Cook, Cavanaugh knew that his heart was in design; he continued adding to his repertoire of skills, including learning leather work, advancing his wood working abilities, and apprenticing at a friend’s blacksmith shop in Charleston, South Carolina. Throughout his career working amongst the trades, Cavanaugh always felt a greater desire to implement his own voice into the work he was creating. In 2003, Cavanaugh started his own carpentry company and, in 2006, he ventured to pursue more creativity-driven projects, which led to his focus on furniture design. “I was so happy to finally have the chance to be completely in control of my own creative process,” says Cavanaugh. His Vision Just like many masters of their Craft, Cavanaugh’s vision comes naturally. He starts with simple ingredients, envisions the outcome, and then actualizes it. “If you truly know your medium, your ideas easily translate,” he says. For Cavanaugh, knowing your materials is an understatement. To him, it’s a personal investment. With a distinct eye for unique materials, he goes at great lengths to find materials with notably defining qualities to work with. Additionally, he favors working with indigenous woods. “Some of my favorite local woods are cherry and black walnut. Black walnut is a sustainable hardwood that grows commonly around here. It has a nice consistency to work with, and the color is exquisite.” Cavanaugh works with reclaimed wood too, which oftentimes comes with a story. “Old wood from trees that were hundreds of years old is rich with history and is an honor to work with,” says Cavanaugh. “It’s like molding time.” Current Work While Cavanaugh continues to create custom woodwork in his Frenchtown, New Jersey workshop, he is always reinventing and exploring new territory when it comes to design and craftsmanship. His 2016 Trophy Series has provided additional opportunities to design and build custom pieces for private clients. “I’m really excited to offer the Trophy line of furniture. It melds my love of combining wood and metal in its simplest form. It feels great to bring together two modalities I’m so drawn to.” “In design, you capture emotions,” he says, “If it stirs something in me, perhaps it will stir something in you.”
