Pierluigi Giordani Monumental Biomorphic Dining Table, Wood + Glass, Italy 1950s

About the Item

Pierluigi Giordani, (1924 - 2011) A monumental biomorphic dining table in polished fruitwood by pioneering Italian midcentury designer Pierluigi Giordani. The imposing sculptural base is daringly asymmetrical: On one end, it tapers into sharply angled legs stretching out from a smoothly carved crossbar. On the other end, it expands into a slanted trapezoid that thickens where the facing legs winnow, joined by a single arched foot. The whole is graceful, strong, and surreal, evocative of the anthropomorphic sculpture of Isamu Noguchi and Barbara Hepworth, or Picasso's grasping, geometric seaside nudes. With a remarkable inch-thick glass top signed Fontana, this piece is as much a three-dimensional work of art as it is a functional dining table. A sought-after contemporary of Carlo Mollino, Gio Ponti, and Ico Parisi, Giordani limited his production mostly to private commissions so as not to compromise his radical vision, and refused to replicate on an industrial scale his vividly imagined and painstakingly handcrafted works. A unique work, for a private commission in Bologna. Italy, 1950's. 71" L x 47" W x 29.5" H
