Regency English Mahogany Antique Extending Dining Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A fine quality late regency period mahogany extending dining
table retaining exceptional colour and patina to well figured top
with two original removable leaves raised on elegant turned and
fluted legs with superbly carved corner patrae & original brass
castors
(With a whole plethora of options available in terms of antique dining
tables it can be an absolute mine field trying to decide which suits each
individual purpose. This particular example is worth considering for a variety
of reasons, not least the fantastical overall quality and excellent choice of
timber selected. It also retains a good colour and patina. The extending
design is of the full out type which is generally seen in the earlier Georgian
and Regency versions, the wind out design more commonly seen is generally
regarded as a Victorian and later feature. Another advantage of this design is
that there is just the 4 corner legs which allow maximum flexibility in terms of
chair and human leg...

There are (3) large leaves and in typical French fashion they are not mahogany, but we did ebonize the leaves to match the Louis XVI round...

19th Century English Victorian Burl Wood and Ebonized Dining or Center Table
Located in Firenze, IT
This English 19th century Victorian period round table is constructed in a well patinated amboyna, burr walnut and ebonized wood, its convenient scale, great proportions and architectural features made it the perfect table in a dining room or in a foyer or entrance as a centerpiece.
The amboyna circular top with beautiful book matched burl Walnut veneer and ebonized banding is nicely enriched by a metal beaded thread. The thin burr and ebonized apron under the top completes the aesthetic of this table without compromising the comfort of the seat.
The whole rises on four column shaped supports, terminating in outswept section legs with scroll feet and recessed brass castors, with a round cross stretcher.
Although victorian in date this table draws on a variety of different stylistic features, from a range of different periods.
The use of beautiful amboyna veneers with the most warm color, set against ebonised mouldings is very much a 19th century feature however, the contrast created providing both a boldness and elegance all in one.
This dining room or centre table is constructed from excellent timbers and when taking into account the overall quality of construction as well it is clear that it was produced in one of the top cabinet makers workshops of the time, very much in the manner of Holland and Son or Gillows but not marked.
Stable and sturdy, which is due to the columns stretcher support design, and at the same time very easy to move - thanks to the recessed wheels- this is a most practical table indeed, perfect for a wide variety of spots around the home, as a small sized dining or breakfast table or as a hall centre table. Wherever you want to place it is certain to become a treasured addition to your antique furniture collection, not to mention the proud centerpiece in your reception room.
The top comes off simply by unscrewing four large ancient iron...

Baldock, Edward Holmes (1777–1845)
In 1805 Baldock's name first appears as the freehold owner of 7 Hanway Street, London. Over the years he expanded his premises. By 1840 his property in this street comprised nos 1 and 2, both with back premises, and in addition he owned a yard and no. 3, which he let. It was in 1 and 2 Hanway Street that he carried on business up to 1843 when he retired, selling his stock and moving to a fashionable residential address, Hyde Park Place. According to one 19th-century source, the business was taken over by Frederick Litchfield's father. He was buried in St Pancras Church, Euston, where he is commemorated by a marble memorial tablet on the north wall, dedicated jointly to him and Mary Frances Westoby.
In 1805 he described himself as dealer in china and glass. By 1821 he was styled in the Post Office Directories as antique furniture and ornamental china dealer, and in 1826 he described his activities in a bill heading as ‘buying, selling, exchanging and valuing China, Cabinets, Screens, Bronzes etc.’. Though Baldock's business consisted primarily in dealing in antique porcelain and furniture — largely foreign — he repaired, remodelled and altered existing furniture. He also produced designs for new pieces and had them made.
In 1836 Baldock sold French eighteenth-century furniture to Lady Stafford (Countess of Sutherland) for Dunrobin Castle, and in 1842 Scotland’s leading country house architect, William Burns, recommended to his patron O. Tyndall Bruce of Falkland House that ‘for Cabinets and China, do not omit going to Baldock’s Hanway Street, Oxford Street… which is the first place in London’.
In 1841 the Duke of Buccleuch was sent drawings of bedroom furniture as well as working drawings of an octagonal table, a bookcase and three stalls. A design of a table in the Buccleuch papers which is annotated ‘No. 3 Amboyna wood ground with coloured flowers’ is almost certainly the preliminary sketch for a table which was later made. Robert Byng (1764-1847) and George Newport, 2nd Earl of Bradford were also customers of Baldock’s. In 1840 he supplied a two encoignures with slab tops to the latter (one illus. FHS Newsletter (February 2017, p. 5). A pair of china cabinets on stands...
