White Marble Dining Table and Bar Unit, Claudio Salocchi for Sormani Italy 1960s

About the Item

Dining table, it belongs to the Ellisse collection by Claudio Salocchi, who developed most of his cutting edge designs for the Sormani Ccompany in Arosio, Italy. Ellisse, together with the Lia chairs, was mainly a series of experimental luxury containers in extruded aluminium (see the bar unit). The tables more frequently had wooden tops. Those with marble tops are quite rare. The base of the table is aluminium smelting and the support is a Perspex cylinder (with a few very minor scratches). The top is in polyester-finished white marble. The marble shows some wear and tear: a couple of repairs, some minor cracks, not affecting the surface and a slight yellowing due to polyester aging. Though, if sanded and polished again, it will look new. The oval, bevelled table sits six: the size is cm 180 x 130 height 73 cm. Size in inches: 70" 7/8 x 51" 3/16, height 28" 3/4 Marble thickness: 2 cm (51/64) This piece matches perfectly with all the floor lamps of the Sormani collection and with the dry bar highboard unit. It is ideal for luxurious dining corners in city flats. Dry bar, the whole idea of the Ellisse collection was to use extruded aluminium as main feature: three extruded pieces to form a whole series of high class containers used as bar units, chests of drawers and tilt-door wall-mounted sideboards. This double-sided bar unit is a clear example of how industrial design was conceived in 1967, the vault of the space age. The block is two-sided and has one lower unit, with four aluminium drawers on one side and four on the opposite. A perfect highlight for your lounge, sitting or dining room. The upper side has a tilt door on front and back, with a brake and a magnet. Inside each compartment, a movable, H-shaped shelving unit in HPL-like material. The drawers in the lower part (with upper and lower side in white lacquered wood and sides in aluminium) have aluminium fronts and HPL and wooden sides. The upper part has aluminium sides and the rest is white mat lacquered wood. The full size in cm is height 100 x 93 x 93 (in inches height 39" 3/8 x 36" 39/64 x 36" 39/64). Lower container is on castors and can be moved around the room. The piece can be divided in two parts: upper and lower. In this case, the lower part would need extra feet or castors). It is usually best displayed in the middle of a room or to divide the dining area from the living room. It is in perfect condition. Because of the characteristic of the materials, the lower drawers are a little hard to pull. The pieces come with a "Certificate of Authenticity" on original letterhead of the Manufacturer.

  • 1967 Salocchi White Mirrored Vanity with Light and Tilting Top Sormani, Italy
    By Sormani, Claudio Salocchi
    Located in Arosio, IT
This is an original piece of 1967, that was meant to be put in the middle of a room, thus its name "centro". It is a white cube with a tilt-top that turns into a mirror with a built-in light on two sides. Size is cm 59 H x 81 x 81 (ft: H 1' 11" 15/64 x 2' 7" 57/64 x 2' 7" 57/64). Even the two light bulbs are still the original ones, perfectly functioning. A transformer must be applied for US plugging. All drawers (4 rotating on the back and two on the front) work perfectly. The finish is slightly damaged on the lower back drawers (shows some not very noticeable swelling) and one of the front drawers has a slightly different hue (due to light and time). All the hardware and the tilting hardware in chrome-stained brass are perfect. Amina was a disruptive series of extremely contemporary containers for the home, envisaged by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani in the mid-1960s. It was the first series of totally white, squared furniture for the living- dining- and bedroom of international level. Almost a scandal for an era still tied to traditional wooden finishes and shapes. From scandal to success, this chest of drawers or coiffeuse was displayed with the rest of the collection of beds, tables, modular shelving units, in several movies of the early Seventies such as "L'Invasion" of Yves Allergret, with Michel Piccoli and Lisa Gastoni. The piece comes with a certificate of provenance on original Sormani letterhead. Please check also LU3681116076542 to have a matching ensemble
