Wood and Marble Petalas Oval Table by Brazilian Yankatu

The brazilian solid cabreúva wood bases surpasses the champagne marble top and stands out on the surface of the table, creating an unexpected and sophisticated design and allowing the table to be used either alone, as a highlight in an entrance hall, as accompanied by chairs in an elegant dining room. The Petalas table design was inspired by the flower petals painted by the artisans of Jequitinhonha Valley in their ceramic pieces after a period of immersion in the community in which the designer Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros researched about the materials and studied about the origins of this traditional craftwork in this region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. All the pieces produced by Yankatu are numbered and accompanied by its soul, a small book that tells about the inspiration that gave birth to it and leaves blank pages so that its story can continue to be told by those who acquire it, turning it into something more, which does not change with fashion, which does not go by with time. To the contrary, it will move on from a generation to another, from hand to hand, each time with more stories to tell, each time incorporating the lives shared by it. The wood comes from nature, each one is unique, with its veins, knots and tones. Because it is a natural material it suffers with the climate change, so cracks an shifts in color may emerge over time. The wood can also warp sometimes due to a large variation in relative humidity of the air. This aren’t defects on the contrary, all of this is considered normal. The Brazilian champagne marble is a natural material so its veins and tones may vary.

View Profile
The curiosity and desire in revealing the national richness, hidden by the interiors and nooks of Brazil, is what moves me, MARIA FERNANDA PAES DE BARROS. To do so I create pieces in solid wood that don’t follow trends. I want my brand, YANKATU, to express my passion, my values, combining ethics and aesthetics, nature and handcrafting, consciousness and consumption, creating sensations and generating emotions. I want it to tell the stories from the people and places that served as inspirations and whose works are incorporated, and, doing so, I want to pass on the traditions of my country. And with this in mind I've bumped into a writing of the Villas Boas brothers quoting a belief of the Kamayurá natives: "The native is born with three souls. The first and second souls, conceived by man and woman, dies with the individual. The third, Yankatu, is pure essence. It is beauty. It is this soul that grants a person the dignity that she/her have as a human being.” Yankatu is the pure essence. Sustainable aesthetic and affectionate. It's a bridge between "a handmade Brazil" and the market, an invisible stitch that helps the promotion of brazilian artisanal work and the maintenance of its tradition and history, making each object especial. A Brazil without cliché, in which the beauty of imperfection is valued. Antique technics, new ideas. Delight that exceeds the object.
