About the Item

This pembroke table exhibits an austerity and simplicity that is most attractive. The top is crafted of solid plank cherry leaves and two planks of cherry for the top, each a wonderful display of ribbed grains with excellent color. The leaves lift over original cast iron hinges, each retaining what would appear to be the original screws, resting on Dual wings that swing out from the frame over knuckle-hinges. The result is a very stable surface that would probably have been enjoyed for card games and entertaining. A single drawer slides out of the front, the edges framed in applied cockbead molding, the sides and bottom of the drawer cut from pine. The bottom board is feathered along three edges and set in grooves along the sides of the frame in the typical manner. The drawer retains what would appear to be the original bail pull, of the period and in it's original holes. The frame of the table is crafted with tenon-mortise joinery locked in place with double wooden pinning at each of the four corners. The inner and outer portions of the frame are nailed together with a series of rosehead nails along the inside of the frame. An examination of the underside of the table shows an untouched structure and wonderful nut brown surface oxidization throughout. Most attractive are the angular Marlborough legs, chamfered along the inner edge and terminating in a spur over the softened square block feet. Preserved in excellent overall condition and originality, this is a most fine acquisition, it is particularly effective as a strike point piece in a hallway beneath a pier mirror, though frequently is also employed as an occasional table for the living spaces. Measurements: 38 7/8" W (opened) 19" W (closed) x 32" D x 29 1/16" H Condition report: Old refinish. Light scuffs to the top. One leg with loss of spur. Original hinges, screws and untouched structure. Very slight warp to leaves. We have additional images available upon request.
